The "Invoke-WmiMethod" cmdlet dispatches incorrect results on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you specify multiple computer names in the Invoke-WmiMethod cmdlet. When some computers do not work or some computer names are invalid, the cmdlet dispatches the result from the last successful computer incorrectly. Additionally, if there is no previous successful computer, the cmdlet does not dispatch any results.

The following are examples of cmdlets when this issue occurs:

Example 1

$results = invoke-wmimethod -class win32_process -name Create -argumentlist @('notepad.exe') -computername @('localhost','invalidcomputer')

The expected result is that the results variable contains one element from localhost. However, the actual result is that the results variable contains two elements from localhost. Both of the elements are identical (they have the same process ID).

Example 2

$results = invoke-wmimethod -class win32_process -name Create -argumentlist @('notepad.exe') -computername @('invalidcomputer', 'localhost')

This example works because the invalid computer name is set to the first parameter. However, there is no previously successful result for Invoke-WmiMethod cmdlet to dispatch.

Example 3

$results = invoke-wmimethod -class win32_process -name Create -argumentlist @('notepad.exe') -computername @('localhost', 'invalidcomputer', 'localhost')

The expected result is that the results variable contains two elements from localhost. These two elements have different process IDs. However, the actual result is that the results variable contains three elements from localhost. The first two elements have the same process ID, and the last element has a different process ID.

Example 4

$results = invoke-wmimethod -class win32_process -name Create -argumentlist @('notepad.exe') -computername @('invalidcomputer', 'localhost', 'invalidcomputer')

The expected result is that the results variable contains one element from localhost. However, the actual result is that the results variable contains two elements from localhost. Both of the elements are identical (they have the same process ID).

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section.
