What is Best Practices Analyzer for the WSUS role?

On a computer that has the WSUS role installed, Best Practices Analyzer scans the server to determine whether the WSUS role is installed and configured correctly.

Important The scan operation of Best Practices Analyzer does not change any system configurations.

Best Practices Analyzer generates a report of the scan results. If any problems are identified, they are displayed in the report as a list of issues that you can sort by severity. The report also contains recommendations together with links to the instructions that describe how to resolve these issues.

Prerequisite

No prerequisites are required to install this update. After you install this update, the WSUS role component is updated regardless of whether you have installed the WSUS role or not. This behavior makes sure that you have the same experience when you use Best Practices Analyzer for the WSUS role even if you install the role later.

How to install the WSUS role

You must correctly install the WSUS role to make sure that Best Practices Analyzer is enabled for the WSUS role. One of the methods is to install the WSUS role by using Server Manager. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
2. In Server Manager, right-click Roles, and then click Add Roles to start the Add Roles Wizard.
3. On the Before You Begin page, click Next.
4. On the Server Roles page, click to select the Windows Server Update Services check box, and then click Next.
   
   Note When you select the Windows Server Update Services check box, you may be prompted to add more role services that are required for the WSUS role. If you are prompted, click Add Required Role Services.
5. On the Web Server (IIS) page, click Next.
6. On the Select Role Services page, click Next.
7. On the Windows Server Update Services page, click Next.
8. On the Confirm Installation Selections page, click Install.

How to remove the WSUS role

To remove the WSUS role, follow these steps:

• Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
• In Server Manager, right-click Roles, and then click Remove Roles to start the Remove Roles Wizard.
• On the Before You Begin page, click Next.
• On the Remove Server Roles page, click to clear the Windows Server Update Services check box, and then click Next.
• On the Confirm Removal Selections page, click Remove.
