"Stop: 0x000000F4": error message when a console application is exiting in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. If you press a key when a console application is exiting, the computer may crash. When this issue occurs, you receive the following Stop error message on a blue screen:
STOP 0x000000F4 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
Notes
  • The four parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all the "Stop 0x000000F4" error messages are caused by this issue.

Cause

The issue occurs because of an access violation that happens when the Csrss.exe process tries to access a freed console structure. Then the Csrss.exe process stops unexpectedly and the computer crashes.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
