A crash occurs in late-bound COM calls that are dispatched through the ITypeInfo::Invoke method in a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or of Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • An x64-based version of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
    • An x64-based version of Windows Server 2008 SP2
    • An IA-64-based version of Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • A late-bound COM client calls the ITypeInfo::Invoke�method.
  • The ITypeInfo::Invoke�method returns a safe array.
In this scenario, the COM client crashes.

Note The issue also occurs in other 64-bit versions of Windows.

This issue occurs because of an error in the Oleaut32.dll file.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
