Error message in Excel Services 2010 when you refresh a workbook that uses an .odc file as a data connection: "An error has occurred."

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Microsoft Excel Services 2010.
  • You refresh a workbook that uses an .odc file as a data connection.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
An error has occurred.

Cause

This problem occurs when the .odc file is hand-edited and contains special non-escaped characters.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, correctly escape any special characters in the file according to XML rules. Any special characters must be XML-escaped. The hand-edited portion should be in the <CommandText> element as escaped XML characters.
