Stop error in Windows Server 2003 SP2: "0x0000007E"

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You enable the Single Instance Storage (SIS) feature on this computer.
  • The operating system is under heavy load.
In this scenario, you receive the following Stop error message:
Stop 0x0000007E (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

  • The parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.
  • Not all "0x0000007E" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because of a race condition that occurs when the SIS filter driver (Sis.sys) is used. This race condition causes the SIS filter driver (Sis.sys) to incorrectly access an invalid memory address. Therefore, you receive the Stop error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
