Computer cannot enter sleep or hibernation when you do not share media files

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You enable network sharing on a computer that is running Windows 7.
  • The Allow the computer to enter Away mode is selected for the Media Sharing section in the selected power plan.
  • You do not share media on this computer, such as audio, video and pictures.
In this scenario, the computer cannot enter sleep or hibernation.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Windows Media Player network sharing service sets power state flags when media is shared. When you stop sharing media, the power state flags are not reset to allow the computer to enter sleep or hibernation.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.
Windows 7 file information notes
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
