You receive a warning when you use the UUIDGEN.exe command or the UuidCreateSequential function on a computer that has a valid network adapter address

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2003.
  • You install a network adapter that has a valid MAC address on this computer.
  • You run the following command on this computer.
    uuidgen /x
In this scenario, you receive the following warning message.
Warning: Unable to determine your network address. The UUID generated is unique on this computer only. It should not be used on another computer.
Additionally, you receive an RPC_S_UUID_LOCAL_ONLY error when you use the UuidCreateSequential function.

Cause

This issue occurs because the operating system incorrectly evaluates MAC addresses of network adapters.

Resolution

Hotfix information
