The Storage Explorer Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in window crashes on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 when you use the snap-in to monitor HBA status

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • A Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) is installed on the computer.
  • You open the Storage Explorer Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in window to monitor the HBA status and the performance statistics on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows 7
    • Windows Server 2008 R2

Note When you use a Storage Explorer MMC snap-in on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows 7, the computer must have Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed.
In this scenario, the Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window stops responding at the "Gathering SAN information" stage. When you click the window, it crashes.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window does not verify the returned zone information before the snap-in window accesses the information. Therefore, the zone information may be invalid. When invalid zone information is accessed, an access violation occurs.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply this hotfix on the computer that you use GPMC to monitor the HBA status.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
    6.0.600
    1.
    22xxx
Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008SP1LDR
