The DFS Replication service stops responding on the downstream server in Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, you install the Distributed File System (DFS) Replication service.
  • You configure this computer to be a Hub server in a data collection scenario. This Hub server is a downstream server that replicates files from many partners that are known as upstream servers.
  • The DFS Replication service on the Hub server is under a heavy load.
In this scenario, the DFS Replication service of the Hub server stops responding. However, you do not receive an error message or notification.

Notes:
  • When you check the replication backlog by using the dfsrdiag backlog command, you notice that the output list is the same every time that you run the command.
  • When you restart the DFS Replication service on a downstream server, the replication process resumes.

Cause

This issue occurs because the DFS Replication service encounters a deadlock.
