A terminal server that is running Windows Server 2008 stops responding when lots of clients make terminal sessions to the server

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You have the "Terminal Services" role installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008. If lots of clients make terminal sessions to the server, the increased load may cause the server to stop responding.

Cause

The problem is caused by an error in Credentials Manager (CredMan). The Credentials Manager does not initialize a handle correctly. This behavior causes a handle to be closed two times. If the handle is reassigned to another resource after the first closure and before the second closure, a valid handle is closed by mistake. If the handle belongs to a LSASS named pipe, the incorrect handle closure causes the server to stop responding.
