Summary

This update improves the stability and the reliability of Windows 7 and of Windows Server 2008 R2. The update was released in April 2010.

Information for advanced users and for IT professionals


This update resolves issues that affect some computers that are running Windows 7 or that are running Windows Server 2008 R2. These issues are reported by customers who use the Error Reporting service or who use Microsoft Customer Support Services.

Issues that this update fixes

This update improves the stability and the reliability of Windows 7 and of Windows Server 2008 R2 in various scenarios. This update resolves the following issues:
  • Windows Explorer crashes and then restarts when you access a third-party Control Panel item.
  • You cannot connect to an instance of SQL Server Analysis Services from an application in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 after you install Office Live Add-in 1.4 or Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 6.5.
  • Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed.
  • The Welcome screen may be displayed for 30 seconds when you try to log on to a computer if you set the desktop background to a solid color.
  • You are not warned when you delete more than 1000 files at the same time. Then, the files are deleted permanently and are not moved to the Recycle Bin.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

How to determine whether you are running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7 or a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2


To determine the version of Windows that you are running, follow these steps:
  1. Click StartStart Button , right-click Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. A window appears where you can view basic information about your computer. In the System type information under the System section, you can see whether a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows 7 is listed or whether a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2 is listed.

To apply this update, you must be running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 on the computer.

You may have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

This update replaces the following updates:

The global version of this hotfix installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The dates and the times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time together with your current daylight saving time (DST) bias. Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.
Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, extremely important issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2 and for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
