A mailbox database copy stays in a Failed state after a "-1022" disk I/O error occurs in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

Symptoms

After page patching is initiated to restore a page for a "-1022" disk I/O error in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment, the following issues occur:
  • A mailbox database copy stays in a passive mode and in a "Failed" state.
  • You receive the following error message:
    The Microsoft Exchange Replication service encountered an error while inspecting the logs and database for <database name>\<server name> on startup. Error: File check failed: File '<the path and name of the database>' could not be opened. The file is locked or in use.
