Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You join a domain on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. You also configure a disjointed namespace for this domain.
  • You try to create a subscription by using the Source computer initiated type in the Event Viewer window.
  • You click Select Computer Groups in the Subscription Properties dialog box. Then click Add Domain Computers to add a computer name.
In this scenario, the prefix of the computer name is incorrect. For example, the DNS domain name is "corp.test.com". The NetBIOS domain name is "web". The selected computer name is "computer001". In this situation, the full computer name is displayed as "corp\computer001" instead of "web\computer001". Additionally, if you select the computer name and then click OK, the operation fails and you receive the following error message:
domain\computer cannot be translated to a security identifier. It will not be added to the list.

Cause

This issue occurs because the first section of the FQDN differs the NETBIOS domain name. In this situation, the system obtains an invalid domain name. Therefore, the system cannot locate the security identifier (SID) for the computer account.
