Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You disable User Account Control (UAC) on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You create a file in or copy a file to the Public Desktop folder under the path "%PUBLIC%\Public Desktop". For example, you create a test.txt file in the folder.
  • You close all Windows Explorer windows that are open.
  • You try to rename the file on the desktop.
In this scenario, the file disappears from the desktop immediately after you rename the file.

Note By default, the Public Desktop folder is hidden. To show the hidden folder, follow these steps:
  • Open the Windows Explorer, click Organize, and then click Folder and Search Options.
  • Click the View tab, and then click to select the Show hidden files, folders and drives option.

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page.
