The client printer may print the documents by using an incorrect paper size if the "Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first" policy is enabled

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You run a Remote Desktop session on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first policy is enabled. This policy redirects the print function to a client printer first.

Note By default, the Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first policy is enabled on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The printer on the client computer uses a driver that defines a custom form size.

Note A custom form size is a custom paper size.
In this scenario, the client printer may print the printout by using an incorrect paper size.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Microsoft XPS Document Converter (MXDC) determines the paper size by using the FormID value on the server. Sometimes, the different paper sizes are assigned the same FormID value on the client computer and on the server, or the specified FormID value does not exist on the server. Therefore, the printout is incorrect because of the different paper sizes.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use the forms that are defined by the system when you print. The paper sizes for these forms match on the server and on the client computer. Additionally, a printer driver can rename these forms. However, the form remains the same on the server and on the client computer.

If you must define a custom form, you may have to use an alternative method for printing. The following are some examples of alternative methods for printing:
  • Use the legacy printer redirection feature that uses some printer drivers that match. To do this, you must disable the Use Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first policy. For more information about how to disable the policy, visit the following Microsoft TechNet Web site:
  • Print the document to a network printer that does not use the printer redirection feature in a remote session.
  • Do not print the document in a remote session. Instead, print the document from an appropriate application that is running on your local computer.
