Table column width shrinks when you use the table-layout:fixed attribute in Internet Explorer 8

Consider this scenario. You use Windows Internet Explorer 8 to browse a Web page that contains a table. This table uses the table-layout:fixed attribute. You select the text that is inside a table cell. After some selections, the width of the cells shrinks and you can see the background of the table.
