A domain user account that has a blank password cannot be used to authenticate against Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 or against Windows Live SkyDrive

You have a domain user account that has a blank password. You use the domain user account to log on to a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, you cannot use the domain user account to authenticate against Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. Therefore, the client computer cannot communicate with the server to upload or download files.

Note This issue also occurs when you try to use the domain user account to authenticate against the Windows Live SkyDrive.

This issue occurs because the Windows Web Services API incorrectly interprets blank passwords when it uses HTTP header authentication. When you use a blank password to authenticate against SharePoint Server 2010 or against Windows Live SkyDrive, an incorrect password is set. Therefore, authentication fails.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
