Stop error on a terminal server that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 when a user remotely controls another terminal server session: "STOP: 0x0000007E"

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Terminal Service server role on a computer that is running 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008.
  • You create a terminal server session to the terminal server.
  • In the terminal server session, you request to remotely control another terminal server session.
  • The user in the other terminal server session accepts the request.
In this scenario, you receive the following Stop error message on the terminal server:
STOP 0x0000007E, {ffffffff80000002, parameter2, parameter3 , parameter4} The SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Note
  • The parameters in this error message vary, depending on the configuration of the computer. However, the first parameter is always 0xffffffff80000002.
  • Not all the "Stop 0x0000007E" Stop errors are caused by this problem.

Cause

This issue occurs because an incorrect parameter is passed to the Rdpwd.sys driver. This behavior causes a kernel-mode alignment fault. This kernel-mode alignment fault causes the terminal server to encounter this Stop error.
