Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have two or more domain controllers that are running one of the following operating systems and that are in a domain:
    • Windows Server 2003
    • Windows Server 2003 R2
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • You configure the replication scope of a custom application partition manually.
  • You remove one of the domain controllers from the replication scope.
In this scenario, the application partition is not removed. Additionally, the following is logged in the Directory Service log:
Log Name: Directory Service
Source: Microsoft-Windows-ActiveDirectory_DomainService
Event ID: 1749

Description:
This directory server is no longer configured to host the following application directory partition. An attempt to transmit its updates and transfer its operations master roles (if any) to another directory server failed because no other directory server that hosts the application directory partition could be found.

Application directory partition:
partition_domain_name

One or more directory servers are currently configured to host the application directory partition, but no replica of the application directory partition could be located.

This operation will be tried again later.

This warning can occur as a result of one of the following situations:

- The directory servers configured to host this application directory partition are offline.
- The directory servers configured to host this application directory partition have not yet completed their initial replication of the application directory partition.
- This directory server cannot find the directory servers due to a network or DNS lookup failure.

Cause

This problem occurs because the directory replication agent (DRA) tries to locate a domain controller that belongs to a domain that is named the same as the partition name.

For example, assume that the application partition has the following name:
DC=MyTestPartition,DC=local
In this scenario, the DRA issues a DNS request for the following record:
_ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site-Name._sites.MyTestPartition.local

Resolution

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Forcibly remove the domain controller.
  • At an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    repadmin /unhost partition_domain_name
