The DNS server entry for a WAN miniport adapter is removed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A WAN miniport network adapter is created on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7. For example, this WAN miniport network adapter uses PPPOE, PPP, or PPTP.
  • You add or remove a network adapter on the computer.
In this scenario, the DNS server entry for the WAN miniport network adapter is removed unexpectedly. Therefore, name resolution requests fail for network traffic through the WAN miniport network adapter.

Notes
  • The issue does not occur in Windows Server 2003.
  • The skipassource flag of IP addresses is cleared after you use the GUI to change IP settings of a network adapter in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2.  For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
2554859 The "skipassource" flag of IP addresses is cleared after you use the GUI to change IP settings of a network adapter in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Cause

This issue occurs because the binding functionality between TCP/IP and the WAN miniport in Windows Server 2008 R2 and in Windows 7 differs from the corresponding functionality in Windows Server 2003. Because of this difference, configuration information for the WAN miniport network adapter is unexpectedly removed when a network adapter is added or removed from the computer.
