Memory usage keeps increasing if Schannel authentication is used after the update 968389 is installed in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install update 968389 on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
  • You run an application that uses the Schannel functions to handle the user authentication requests.
In this scenario, the memory usage of the application keeps increasing.



Note This issue occurs if the application calls the InitializeSecurityContext function or the AcceptSecurityContext function.

The Schannel.dll module does not free the allocated memory space.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
