FIX: Error message when you access an NFS share from a computer that is running Windows Vista SP2 or Windows Server 2008 SP2: "Incorrect Function. Access Denied"

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Client for NFS component on a computer that is running Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You enable the Distributed File System (DFS) on the computer. By default, DFS is enabled on the client computer.
  • You run an application that uses a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to access a network file system (NFS) share.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Incorrect Function.
Access Denied

Cause

This problem occurs because the computer identifies the UNC path as a DFS path.

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 SP2 or Windows Vista SP2, queries are sent through multiple UNC providers (MUPs) to the NFS server. When a UNC path is used, the NFS server returns the STATUS_NOT_IMPLEMENTED flag that is not included in the DFS error list of the computer. Therefore, the computer recognizes this flag as a success flag even though the UNC path is not a DFS path. This behavior causes the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 file information notes
Important Windows Vista hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only "Windows Vista" is listed on the Hotfix Request page. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Vista" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.

  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

More information

Samba is an application that allows Windows-based systems to map and to use shared volumes that reside on Linux-based systems by using the Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol. By using the Samba application, Windows-based clients can map the shared volumes that are located on a Linux server and use them as if they resided on a Windows-based server.
