The Group Policy Management Editor window crashes when you apply some changes for NRPT policy settings

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You open the Group Policy Management Editor window to create some Name Resolution Policy Table (NRPT) policy entries on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008.
  • You add or edit a NRPT policy and then click the Apply button to apply the setting.
In this scenario, the Group Policy Management Editor Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in window may crash.

Cause

The name field of these NRPT policy settings should be saved as a MULTI_SZ data type in the registry. This data type requires two NULL characters as the terminating null characters. However, the Group Policy Management Editor does not add the two NULL characters when Group Policy Management Editor saves the settings. Therefore, the Group Policy Management Editor window crashes when it tries to save the settings.
