You cannot import a driver into an OSD image if the driver is signed for only the Windows 7 operating system in System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) site server on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
  • You try to import a driver into an Operating System Deployment (OSD) image. The driver is signed for only the Windows 7 operating system.
In this scenario, the Import New Driver wizard fails. At the same time, you receive the following error message:
The Import New Driver Wizard completed with errors. For more information about the tasks that were not completed, see details.


Details:

Error: Some driver(s) cannot be imported successfully, please see following details.

Error: Failed to import the following drivers:

<Driver file> The selected driver is not applicable to any supported platforms
Note This issue does not occur if the driver is signed for both the Windows Vista operating system and the Windows 7 operating system.

The Import New Driver wizard cannot recognize drivers that are signed for only the Windows 7 operating system.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To apply this hotfix, System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Service Pack 2 (SP2) must be installed on the computer.

Note The following hotfix package can be installed on a System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site server that is running an x86-based version of an operating system or an x64-based version of an operating system: 
SCCM2007-SP2-KB978754-X86-ENU.msi

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

More Information

You cannot install the hotfix that is described in this article on some site system configurations. For example, you cannot install this hotfix on the SMS Provider server in the following configuration:
ServerDescription
ASite Server that is running System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2
BDatabase server for the Server A
CSMS Provider server that is not a Site System server

In this configuration, you cannot install the hotfix on Server C because the System Center Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 binary files are not installed on the server. To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Manually copy the Osdcore.dll from Server A to Server C.
  2. Restart the WMI Service on Server C.
  3. Restart the SMS Executive Service on Server A.
Note We recommend that you move the SMS Provider back to the Site Server server before the update process to make sure that the SMS Provider server is updated automatically.
