Internet Explorer 8 opens a URL that links to a Microsoft Office file from the Temporary Internet Files folder

Symptoms

You use Windows Internet Explorer 8 to open a URL that links to a Microsoft Office file, such as a Word document or an Excel worksheet. However, the file does not open from the server location. Instead, the file opens from the Temporary Internet Files folder.

For example, you use Internet Explorer 8 to open a link to a .docx file. This file opens with a suffix [1] at the end of its file name. After you edit this file, you click the Save button to save the file. In this case, you find that the file is directly saved to the Temporary Internet Files folder.

This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You use a computer that is running a x64-based edition of Windows 7 or a x64-based edition of Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You have a 32-bit edition of Internet Explorer 8 and a 64-bit edition of Microsoft Office suite installed.

Cause

This issue occurs because Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 removes the registry reflection feature. Therefore, the 32-bit CLSID registry value and the 64-bit CLSID registry value of a Windows Office application is out of synchronization. This causes Internet Explorer 8 to directly open a Microsoft Office file from the Temporary Internet Files folder instead of from the server location of the file.
