Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, a supplementary character is displayed incorrectly as two square boxes. This problem occurs even if a suitable font is installed.

Note A supplementary character is a Unicode character that has a code position higher than U+FFFF. Specifically, the code position of a supplementary character is in one of the following planes:
  • Plane 1 - The Supplementary Multilingual Plane (SMP)
  • Plane 2 - The Supplementary Ideographic Plane (SIP)
  • Plane 14 - The Supplementary Special-purpose Plane (SSP)
  • Plane 15 - Supplementary Private Use Area-A
  • Plane 16 - Supplementary Private Use Area-B

Code points in plane 3 through plane 13 are also affected. However, no code points are currently assigned in these planes.

ImportantThis issue has been resolved in the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.
