A computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 stops responding when you disable or remove a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM device in Device Manager

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • A CD-ROM device or a DVD-ROM device is attached to a SCSI-based controller.
  • You disable or remove the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM device in Device Manager.
In this scenario, the computer stops responding.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in the Cdrom.sys driver. This error causes the Scsiport.sys driver to encounter a deadlock situation. Therefore, the computer stops responding.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
