The Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window crashes if a Fibre Channel HBA is installed in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

Consider the following scenario:

• A Fibre Channel host bus adapter (HBA) is installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008.
• You open the Storage Explorer Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in window to monitor the HBA status and the performance statistics by using a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or a Windows Vista. This computer has Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed.

In this scenario, the Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window stops responding at the Gathering SAN information window. If you click the window, it crashes, and the following event is added to the Application log:

This problem occurs because the Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window does not check a buffer pointer before it tries to free the buffer. When a user queries some storage area network (SAN) information, and when the Fibre Channel HBA adapter returns an error, a buffer is not allocated. However, the Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window does not check the buffer pointer and tries to free the buffer. Therefore, the Storage Explorer MMC snap-in window crashes.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
• The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 and for Windows Vista" section. MUM files and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
