High CPU utilization when the DFS Replication service is installed on a failover cluster node running Windows Server 2008 R2

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

After you install the Distributed File System (DFS) Replication role on a failover cluster node that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, the Clussvc.exe process uses 20 percent to 90 percent of the CPU. The cluster is configured to use hundreds or to use thousands of resources and groups. These resources and groups may not be related to DFS Replication.

Additionally, you may encounter the following behavior:
  • The failover cluster node is very unresponsive.
  • The Dfsrs.exe process uses little or uses zero of the CPU usage
  • The DFS Replication service is unresponsive to a shutdown command sent by using Services.msc or the NET STOP command.
  • The value of the "PerfMon Cluster API Calls Delta" counter indicates hundreds of calls per second or more.
