A PowerShell upgrade leaves extra files after you upgrade from a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003 R2 to a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

After you install Windows PowerShell 2.0 and then upgrade from a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003 R2 to a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2008 R2, you may experience the following problems:
  • There is the folder Accessories (moved) > Windows PowerShell on the Start menu that contains four shortcuts to the following items:
    • Windows PowerShell (x86)
    • Windows PowerShell ISE (x86)
    • Windows PowerShell ISE
    • Windows PowerShell
    However, this folder should not exist.
  • The folder Accessories > Windows PowerShell on the Start menu sometimes does not exist and sometimes only contains two shortcuts to the following items:
    • Windows PowerShell (x86)
    • Windows PowerShell.
    However, this folder should contain four shortcuts to the following items:
    • Windows PowerShell (x86)
    • Windows PowerShell ISE (x86)
    • Windows PowerShell ISE
    • Windows PowerShell

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must install the PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) feature and then uninstall it.
