A server that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 restarts unexpectedly with various stop codes after you install hotfix 971280 or newer Windows Kernel Binaries

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a terminal server that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You have installed a hotfix that updates the Windows kernel binaries.
  • You install the hotfix 971280 or the security update 971486 that is mentioned in the security bulletin MS09-058.

In this scenario, the server restarts unexpectedly. Additionally, you receive a blue screen issue with various stop codes.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

This hotfix replaces the previously-released hotfixes 975986, 975759, 973092, 971408, 971291, 971280, and 971067.
