Event ID 9771 is logged when you try to restore a Volume Shadow Copy Service backup by using an Exchange-aware application that supports the Volume Shadow Copy Service writer for Exchange Server 2010 Standard version

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario. On a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Standard version, you have five mounted mailbox databases and one mounted recovery database on an Exchange Server 2010 Standard server. In this scenario, you try to restore a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) backup to the Exchange Server 2010 Standard server by using an Exchange-aware application that supports the VSS writer for Exchange Server 2010 Standard version. However, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Description:
Exchange VSS Writer failed restoring a backup with error code -1214 when performing an integrity-check of the log files to be used for database recovery after restore for '<databasename>'.

Cause

This error is caused by exceeding the maximum number of mounted databases and recovery database that can be handled by an Exchange Server 2010 Standard server. If you dismount the mounted recovery database, you can mount an additional recovery database.

Workaround

To work around this problem, dismount the mounted recovery database. Then, run the application again.
