FIX: Error message when an application that uses RDS in IIS 7.0 tries to return a recordset: "Microsoft OLEDB Persistence Provider: Rowset can not be loaded because the stream is invalid"

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have an application that is hosted by Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0.
  • The application uses Remote Data Service (RDS).
  • The application tries to return a Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) recordset.
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft OLEDB Persistence Provider: Rowset can not be loaded because the stream is invalid.
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The server that hosts the RDS endpoint is running Windows Server 2008 or a later version of Windows Server.
  • The clients that access the RDS endpoint are running Windows Server 2008 or an earlier version of Windows.
  • The recordset is larger than 4 megabytes (MB).

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008 installed on the client computer.

Method 1



On the client computer, disable HTTP 1.1 in your browser.

Method 2



On the client computer, upgrade to Windows 7 or to Windows Server 2008 R2.
