Symptoms

When you try to remotely manage a print server on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2003, you may receive one of the following error messages:
  • Error message 1
    0x80043333
    Unable to access print$ share. You need to share at least one printer on the target server.
    Additionally, you find an instance of error code 82 in the System log after you receive this error message.
  • Error message 2
    0x80070906.
    This shared resource does not exist. This can occur if the destination computer does not have any shared printers.
    For example, you may receive this error message if you use the PrintBRM.exe command-line tool to restore the print server configurations during migration.

Cause

This issue occurs because the "Print$" share is not created.

Note The "Print$" share is created when a shared printer is added to the server.

Workaround

To work around this issue, do one of the following on the server that has the Print Server role service installed:
  • Log on to the server and then install at least one printer. The "Print$" share is automatically created after the first printer is installed.
  • Remotely install at least one printer by using the Generic / Text Only printer driver.
