FIX: You receive a COMException exception when you run ASP.NET Web applications in IIS 7.0 or IIS 7.5

Symptoms

You have Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 or IIS 7.5 installed. You run a Microsoft ASP.NET Web application in IIS 7.0 or IIS 7.5. However, the Web application intermittently stops working. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in the IHttpConnection::IsConnected method. If the IHttpConnection::IsConnected method is called immediately after a Web client connection is dropped, the method incorrectly returns a true value instead of a
false value. Therefore, the COMException exception occurs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have IIS 7.0 or IIS 7.5 installed on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2008 SP2
  • Windows Server 2008 R2

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

More Information

After you apply this hotfix, the error in the IHttpConnection::IsConnected method no longer occurs. However, the event that is described in the "Symptoms" section may continue to appear in the Application log because this event may occur during typical operations. Typically, this event occurs when the client that is sending POST data disconnects from the Web server. To determine whether the event is expected, check the IIS 7.0 log files for the request that was referenced in the Application log. Then, verify the Win32 status code. If the sc-win32-status value is "64" and if the request is a POST operation, the event has occurred because the client disconnected.
