Symptoms

In Internet Explorer 8, you log on to a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Web site that requires authentication. When you open a new tab or a new window in the Web site, you are prompted unexpectedly to enter your logon credentials again.

For example, you log on to an Outlook Web Access site that is load balanced in the SSL session state and try to create a new e-mail message. This action opens a new window. Then, you are prompted to enter your logon credentials again.

Cause

When Internet Explorer 8 creates a new process for a new tab or a new window, the new process is not shared. Therefore, the SSL session state of the new tab or the new window is not shared. Because of this behavior, users receive additional authentication prompts.
