The existing PPTP connections to a VPN server that is hosted in a Windows Server 2003-based NLB farm or in a Windows Server 2008 R2-based NLB farm do not work after a new node is added to the NLB farm

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • A Network Load Balancing (NLB) farm is created by using some computers that are running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • Some virtual private network (VPN) servers are hosted in the NLB farm.
  • You create some Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) connections to the VPN servers through the NLB farm.
  • A new NLB node is added to the NLB farm.
In this scenario, the existing PPTP connections do not work after the convergence is finished. If you analyze the captured network trace, you find that all Generic Routing Encapsulation packets over the PPTP connections are dropped by NLB.

Cause

The issue is caused by the Network Load Balancing (NLB) component.

After a new NLB node is added to the NLB farm, and after the convergence is finished, some active connections that are connected to the first NLB node are transferred to the new one for load balancing. However, some connection attributes are not transferred correctly. Therefore, the NLB component drops all Generic Routing Encapsulation packets.

Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes
Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
