View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You start Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 for the first time.
  • In the Set Up Windows Wizard, you open the Microsoft Narrator dialog box before you create a user account.
  • In the Microsoft Narrator dialog box, you click the Control whether Narrator starts when I log on link.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
The server process could not be started because the configured identity is incorrect. Check the username and password.
When you click OK, you receive the following error message:
Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately.

(Exception from HRESULT: 0x800401A).

Cause

This problem occurs during the Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) part of the Windows setup process. When the OOBE Wizard runs, the system uses a secure desktop environment. When you click the Control whether Narrator starts when I log on link, the system tries to access a user account. However, there is no user account for the system to access because a user account has not been created yet. This behavior causes the error message.

Workaround

You can safely ignore this error message and continue the Windows setup. This problem does not occur if you click the link after you create a user account.
