You cannot install Windows Server 2008 R2 to a local drive when the computer is configured to start from an iSCSI boot device

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have configured a computer to connect to an iSCSI boot device at startup.
  • You connect a local hard disk to the computer.
  • You try to install Windows to the local hard disk's boot volume while the system is configured to start from an iSCSI boot device.
In this scenario, when you try to install Windows Server 2008 R2, you receive the following error message during Windows Setup:
The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.

Cause

This issue may occur when the computer is configured to start from an iSCSI boot device and Windows Setup is configured to install to a non-iSCSI boot device.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, do not configure the system to start from an iSCSI boot device unless you want to install Windows Server on the iSCSI boot volume.
