Stop error code after you install Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008: "0x000000D1" or "0x00000050"

A computer that is running Windows Server 2008 may restart unexpectedly after you install Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO). Additionally, you may receive one of the following Stop error messages:

• STOP: 0x000000D1 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
  The DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
• STOP: 0x00000050 (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
  The PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

Note

• The four parameters that are in these error messages depend on the configuration of the computer.
• Not all "0x000000D1" or "0x00000050" Stop error codes are caused by this problem.

This issue occurs because Microsoft Device Specific Module (Msdsm.sys) uses an incorrect variable to set the device information. This behavior causes the system to access an invalid memory address.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, the computer must be running one of the following operating systems:

• Windows Server 2008
• Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Additionally, the computer must have the MPIO feature installed.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
