File corruption may occur if you run a program that uses a file system filter driver in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You run a program that uses a third-party file system filter driver. If the file system filter driver changes file data, you may encounter a file corruption issue.

This issue occurs in the following operating systems:
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2008
For example, you run an encryption program on a computer that is running Windows Vista. This encryption program uses a file system filter driver that changes file data. In this example, file corruption may occur when you start Windows Mail. Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
The message store has been corrupted by an application external to Windows Mail.
Windows Mail has been able to successfully recover from this corruption. (0x00000000)
Note The symptoms that you experience may vary, depending on the implementation of the filter driver and the program that access file data.

Cause

This issue occurs because the NTFS file system sets the Irp->IoStatus.Information field to an incorrect size for some special paging I/O write operations. When this occurs, the file system filter driver cannot correctly detect the length of the data that the NTFS file system has written to the disk. This behavior may stop additional write operations to the disk, and this causes a file corruption issue.
