You receive a "Stop 0x000000CE" error on the restart after you run Windows Update on a virtual machine that is running Windows Server 2000 SP4

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You enable the Hyper-V role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You create a virtual machine and then install Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 (SP4) on the virtual machine.
  • You run Windows Update on the virtual machine.
In this scenario, you receive the following Stop error message when the virtual machine restarts for Windows Update:
Stop 0x000000CE (0xEB440000,0x00000000,0x8045A979,0x00000000)
Driver_Unload_Without_Cancelling_Pending_Operations

Workaround

To work around this problem, do not install Integration Services. Or, install Integration Services after you run all the updates.
