A file name extension is displayed as .soi instead of .xsl in Microsoft Office Excel 2003 on a computer that has Internet Explorer 8 installed

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that has Windows Internet Explorer 8 installed.
  • You click a hyperlink to an .soi file that opens a Microsoft Office Excel 2003 worksheet (.xsl).
  • In the File Download dialog box, you click the Open button to directly open the worksheet in Excel 2003.
In this scenario, the file name extension is displayed as .soi instead of .xsl on the title bar of the worksheet.

Note In the File Download dialog box, the file name extension is displayed correctly as .xls.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

To use the hotfixes in this package, you must create a registry key. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start , type Regedit in the search box, and then press ENTER.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_IPERSISTMONIKER_LOAD_REDIRECTED_URL_KB976425, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click FEATURE_IPERSISTMONIKER_LOAD_REDIRECTED_URL_KB976425, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type Iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click Iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.
Steps for the Wow6432Node registry key

After you install MS10-053 KB2183461 Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update, FEATURE_IPERSISTMONIKER_LOAD_REDIRECTED_URL_KB976425 is enabled by default.

To disable FEATURE_IPERSISTMONIKER_LOAD_REDIRECTED_URL_KB976425 after you install MS10-053 KB2183461 Internet Explorer Cumulative Security, follow these steps.

Note MS10-053 KB2183461 Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update supersedes the registry configuration that is outlined in the "Resolution" section.
  1. Click Start, type Regedit in the search box, and then press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_IPERSISTMONIKER_LOAD_REDIRECTED_URL_KB976425, and then press Enter.
  5. Right-click FEATURE_IPERSISTMONIKER_LOAD_REDIRECTED_URL_KB976425, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type Iexplore.exe, and then press Enter.
  7. Right-click Iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.

    Some applications may not function correctly with this feature enabled. In this case, the applications load, but specific data is not loaded as expected.
