Stop error after you upgrade to Windows Server 2008 R2: "STOP 0x0000007B Inaccessible Boot Device"

Symptoms

After you upgrade from Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
  • You receive the following Stop error message on the first restart of the upgraded system:
    STOP 0x0000007B Inaccessible Boot Device
  • Your computer repeatedly restarts. A similar restart issue is described in the following KB article:

Cause

This issue occurs because the drivers that are in the System device-setup class are not migrated as part of the upgrade process. Therefore, the upgraded computer does not have the required driver loaded.

Resolution

A fresh install of Windows Server 2008 R2 is required if you want to use the following drivers.

For all x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2 or of Windows 7

For all x86-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2 or of Windows 7

For all IA-64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2
