The memory usage of the Dns.exe process keeps increasing after you install hotfix 941672 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and that has the DNS server role installed

Consider the following scenario:

• You install the DNS server role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
• You install hotfix 941672.

In this scenario, the memory usage of the DNS server service (Dns.exe) keeps increasing.

This problem occurs because the DNS server service does not manage allocated memory space correctly in the following situation:

• A DNS server that is running Windows Server 2003 does not receive responses for a DNS name resolution query from the forwarders or from the root hints.
• Multiple clients send queries for the same name resolution.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
