Device Manager or the application stops responding when you use Device Manager or an application to uninstall the driver for a network adapter on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You try to use Device Manager or an application to uninstall the driver for a network adapter on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008. In this case, Device Manager or the application stops responding. Additionally, you notice that the TCP/IP-related registry entries for the driver did not inherit the permission settings of their parent registry entries.

This problem occurs when the Setup program for the driver uses an access control list (ACL) that has a revision level of 3 or that has a later revision level to create these TCP/IP-related registry entries.

Cause

This problem occurs because the TCP/IP driver does not correctly handle the permission settings of these registry entries.

The TCP/IP driver supports only an ACL of revision level 1 and of revision level 2. If the Setup program for the driver uses an ACL that has a revision level of 3 or that has a later revision level to create these TCP/IP-related registry entries, the TCP/IP driver incorrectly removes the inherited ACL from these registry entries.
