Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running Windows Vista or a later version of Windows.
  • You create an OLE link that contains one or more spaces in its path.
  • You try to open the OLE link on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.
In this scenario, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Windows cannot find <path of the OLE link>
Note In this error message, the path of the OLE link is truncated at the first or the only space.

Cause

This issue occurs because OLE links that are created in Windows Vista or in later versions of Windows use long file names (LFN) instead of 8.3 file names (SFN). However, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 do not correctly parse OLE links that use LFN.

Workaround

Open the OLE link in Windows Vista or in a later version of Windows.

Or, replace each space in the file path of the OLE link with an underline. Then, open the OLE link in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003.
