A memory leak occurs when the InnerHTML property of an element is updated repeatedly in Internet Explorer 8

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

You develop a web page in which you set the InnerHTML property of an element to be updated repeatedly. When you browse the web page by using Internet Explorer 8 and you keep the web page open for some time without performing any actions, you will see a memory leak issue inside Internet Explorer.

If you use Performance Monitor (Perfmon.exe) to monitor Internet Explorer processes, you notice that the value of the Private Bytes counter continually increases. This is evidence of a memory leak issue.

Note The value of leaked private bytes reduces when you manually refresh the Web page.
