Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are in an Active Directory domain network environment.
  • You have a Windows Server 2003-based client computer that has Windows Internet Explorer 7 installed.
  • You log on to the computer by using a domain user account that uses a roaming user profile.
  • You log off the computer.
In this scenario, the roaming user profile cache is not deleted.

NoteThis issue occurs even though the "Delete cached copies of roaming profiles" Group Policy setting is enabled.

Additionally, one of the following events is logged in the Application log:
  • If you do not have the UPHClean tool installed on the client computer:
    Event ID : 1517
Description : Windows saved user DOMAIN\User registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
  • If you have the UPHClean tool installed on the client computer:
    Event ID : 1401
    Event Source : UPHClean
Description : The following handles in user profile hive DOMAIN\user (SID) have been remapped because they were preventing the profile from unloading successfully:
    winlogon.exe (6360)
    HKCU\Software\Policies (0x670)
    HKCU\Software (0x674)
This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • Certain Internet Explorer Maintenance (IEM) settings are configured for the user account.
  • One or more Group Policy preferences are enabled for the user account.
